Every production is different, but the star ratings system is consistent. Anything that’s scored 3 stars and above is definitely worth the ticket price and your time. Here’s what each score means.
0 Stars – Unwatchable – We found no positive qualities. Chaotic, incoherent, or careless to the point of disrespecting its audience and craft.
0.5 Sars – Barely There – There is some trace of effort, but on the whole an overwhelmingly flawed and misguided production.
1 Star – Poor – The production falls short on nearly every front. Weak direction and performances, and/or concept.
1.5 Stars – Very Weak – Some elements show promise, such as one decent performance or concept. But these are drowned out by major problems.
2 Stars – Disappointing – There’s a structure in place and an attempt at coherence, but the execution lacks conviction or polish. Doesn’t deliver on its potential.
2.5 Stars – Mediocre – A functional piece of theatre that neither offends nor inspires. There is a modicum of quality, but the overall result feels safe or unfinished.
3 Stars – Good – An adequate production with competent delivery. There may be some standout moments, but it doesn’t fully come together or rise above the expected.
3.5 Stars – Promising – Stronger than average, with real merit. A few missteps stop it short of being remarkable.
4 Stars – Strong – A confident, well-crafted piece of theatre. Thoughtfully directed, engages the emotions, and leaves a lasting impression.
4.5 Stars – Exceptional – Impressive in its artistry and execution. Gripping, thoughtful, and nearly flawless. Must-watch.
5 Stars – Truly unmissable – A rare and outstanding achievement. Bold, moving, and masterfully executed. You’ll certainly have a topic of conversation for post-theatre cocktails.
